What
is snoring?
Snoring is caused
by a partial closure of your airway during sleep due to a relaxation
of the muscles in your neck. The soft tissue then vibrates to cause
the sound of snoring.

Physiology - the shape of the airway in some people makes snoring more likely

Being overweight - excess body fat increases the chances of snoring

Age - as we age weaker throat muscles increase the likelyhood of snoring

Lifestyle - some people snore after drinking alcohol or taking sleeping tablets due to the extra relaxation caused in the neck and throat

Daytime sleepiness

Accidents related to driving while tired

What are
the options for treatment?
Mandibular Advancement
Splints (MAS) are customised mouth pieces made for each patient to
be worn at night time to treat snoring.
There are various options available:
1.
Level One - Economy Option
Snoreshield
is a simple preformed boil and bite mouth piece which helps some snorers.
2.
Level Two
Snoresolve
is clinically proven, custom-fitted for comfort but does not allow
any adjustments for effectiveness.
3.
Gold Standard
The Sleepwell™
is the most clinically proven. Custom-fitted to offer maximum comfort
and retention and allows adjustments to optimise effectiveness.
4.
Losing weight
Loss of weight can reduce or stop snoring and there are numerous other
health benefits but it is a gradual process.
5.
Snoring surgery
There are a number of snoring surgery options but they are not always
successful and can be extremely painful. We recommend this as the
last-resort option to stop snoring.
6.
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)
CPAP is the gold standard for sufferers of severe obstructive sleep
Apnoea, which is a far more serious form of breathing disorder affecting
about 5% of snorers.This is where some snorers stop breathing and
start again a few seconds later accompanied by a choke, gasp or snort.
Every time we stop breathing, known as 'Apnoea', our bodies are starved
of oxygen. CPAP treatment is not recommended for the treatment of
simple snoring.
Where
do I go from here?
The first step in assessing the severity of your (or your partner's)
snoring problem is to complete a pre-screening questionnaire. This
can be done as part of your initial consultation with your dentist
OR a free online assessment done for you. Just click on the link below

Once this is done, you can have your treatment started. It will involve a consultation and set of dental impressions to fabricate the custom fitted splint. A second visit is needed to have the MAS fitted and a demonstration on how to make the adjustments.

Snoreshield is a simple pre-formed thermo plastic Boil and Bite mandibular advancement splint. This splint reduces snoring for some patients and is worn at night whilst asleep. It takes less than 5 minutes to mould Snoreshield to your teeth.
Snoresolve is a clinically proven mandibular advancement splint to treat snoring. Snoresolve is worn in the mouth at night to hold the lower jaw slightly forward. This reduces the risk of the airway narrowing, which causes the vibration of the soft tissue and the sound of snoring.
Sleepwell prevents the lower jaw from dropping back during sleep thereby preventing the closure of your airways during sleep – an effective stop snoring remedy. Sleepwell is a custom made mouth piece produced within our laboratory to fit your teeth. Sleepwell has some unique features including a soft inner lining, allows side to side movement of the lower jaw and most importantly allows the patient to adjust it to maximize effectiveness. High levels of patient comfort meant that during clinical trials over 98% of patients found Sleepwell an acceptable snoring remedy. |
