Dental Implants

Improve your life with dental implants
Whether you've lost one tooth or several you might never have become accustomed to losing your teeth. Now you can have replacement teeth that look, feel and function like natural teeth.

What is a dental implant?
Advances in dental science allow your dentist to offer artificial tooth roots which fuse with the jawbone to form a secure foundation for tooth replacement. Almost all dental implants in use today are made from titanium or titanium alloy, materials that have been shown over many years to be well tolerated by bone.

A dental implant is essentially a substitute for a natural root and commonly it is screw or cylinder shaped. Each implant is placed into a socket carefully drilled at the precise location of the intended tooth.

How many teeth can be supported by implants?
All the common forms of tooth replacement, such as bridges, or dentures can be replaced by dental implants. If you are missing just one tooth, then one implant is normally all that is needed to provide a replacement. Larger spaces created by two, three or more missing teeth do not necessarily need one implant per tooth. Occasionally, it is even possible to join natural teeth to implants with a conventional bridge.

    Benefits of dental implants
  • Improve appearance
  • Improve comfort and speech
  • Eat what you want
  • Smile with confidence
  • Maintain healthy adjacent teeth
  • Long term tooth replacement
  • Improve self esteem

What steps are taken and how long does it take?
Examination, planning and restoration usually takes place in the dentist's office. The surgeon prepares the implant site and places the appropriate number of implants. These are covered with gum tissue while the bone heals. During the next three to six months, the implants will bond with the jawbone. Temporary crowns, bridges or overdentures are optional during this healing period.

Once the implants have fused with the jawbone, a post may be attached to each implant. When the gum tissue has healed, the restorative dentist takes impressions to be used designing the final dental restoration.
